This custom board was made for a client hoping to breathe new life into Machiavelli’s Chess also known as Djambi. This 4 player chess variant was invented in 1975 by Jean Anesto and is played on a 9x9 grid with flat pieces more similar to checkers pieces than classic chess pieces. Each player has 9 pieces of a specific colour and all but 4 pieces in each set are uniquely illustrated.

The game comes to life in this pine box that unfolds into the large board. The interior of the box is equipped with a hand sewn sachet where the 4 sets of game pieces are stored. These pieces have been made from both pine and walnut and have been stamped with original lino block prints depicting the pieces’ specific characters. Found also on the interior of the box are two wooden locks. When implemented they ensure the board maintains its flattened orientation allowing you to flip the board, pick it up and manoeuvre it during play. The exterior of the box has been stained with a walnut stain in an intricate pattern that directly corresponds with the imagery on the game pieces while the 9x9 grid has been stained onto the playing surface as well. As is true with all of our products, this board has been finished with several coats of Tried & True, a food-safe Danish Oil.
